Kendra Graves - Marriage & Family Therapist

Kendra Lynn Graves is a licensed marriage and family therapist, as well as a qualified supervisor in mental health and marriage and family therapy. She states, "My focus has been working with depression, low self-esteem, anxiety, anger, rejection, stress, grief, relational issues, and neglect within the family setting." She received her master's in counseling psychology, specializing in marriage and family therapy from Palm Beach Atlantic University in Orlando. She would like to be certified in the areas of trauma, grief, and anxiety.

"I did not begin my educational journey straight out of high school. I began the journey at the age of 33 because I did not believe I was college material since I did not graduate from high school. Instead, I got my GED. However, I realized throughout my journey that I was capable of attending college. I share this as a highlight: it doesn’t matter, past mistakes; if you put your mind to it you will accomplish your goal."
Kendra's origins lie in Brooklyn, NY, but was raised in Puerto Rico and she is fluent in both Spanish and English. Her hobbies and interests include listening to podcasts or watching YouTube videos that are related to psychology/therapy, which helps her grow in her skills as a therapist. "I also enjoy doing puzzles, it helps me relax. I also enjoy watching movies, going to the beach, and just being in nature."
Kendra is married and lovingly refers to her family as the Brady Bunch. She is passionate about being part of helping couples and families restore their relationships. Kendra used to volunteer in a program within the Catholic church that helps provide resources to pregnant women that they may not otherwise have access to.

She was drawn to her profession after going through her own struggles and not having someone she could open up to and lean on for support while, at the same time, not feeling judged. Kendra enjoys being that person for her clients; being able to provide hope, and witnessing the breakthrough of someone who did not think they could do so. "What makes me unique is my ability to connect with people."
Pro Tip: If you ever want to make Kendra's day, bring her a diet coke.
Some advice that Kendra often finds herself giving the clients she works with include:" Focus on how the behavior or actions of each other makes each other feel,to avoid becoming defensive."
"It’s not what you say, it's how you say it."
"Live by example."

A Helping Hand Counseling Center exists to significantly improve the mental health and well-being of all members of the community through counseling, education, support and advocacy.
